More Chris Stapleton than the Indigo Girls, queer country singer Cindy Emch mixes the toughness of her rural roots with the tenderness of the human condition. Her latest effort Mark’s Yard is a vast departure from the full arrangements and intimate twang of her debut album ‘Stars Fall Shooting Into Twangville.’ Instead for her second effort she opted for a one-microphone / field recording aesthetic as she played some of her favorite cover songs in a back yard in Oakland, CA.
An album of songs both intimate and rowdy, Emch seeks to bring the listener into the after party. Mixing in rare and unreleased songs from Canadian country artists Carolyn Mark and Tolan McNeil, along with classics from Hank Williams, Jr. and Tom Waits, ‘Mark’s Yard’ is an album that brings the warm camaraderie of the campfire right into your living room.
